When you’ve been doing the same consistent workout routine or program for several months, you may find yourself in a fitness rut.
Here are three ways to stop going through the motions and get out of a fitness rut:
1. Focus on the variety in your workouts.
One of the defining characteristics of CrossFit is constant variation. However, unless you’re making an effort to recognize how that variety shows up in every WOD, you might feel like you’re doing the same thing over and over. If you never notice how your workouts vary from a focus on strength to endurance, or movements that include barbells or bodyweight, then everything might start to run together.
One way to appreciate the variety in your workouts is to keep a workout log. Tracking your workouts over time can help you see the variation in the programming and help with maintaining momentum in your routine.
2. Revisit your goals or set new ones.
Another way to get out of a fitness or performance rut is through goal-setting. When was the last time you revisited your goals? If it’s been a while, it might be time to reassess and set new goals for yourself.
Make sure that your goals are relevant to where you want to take your fitness and your training. If you’re not excited about your goals or don’t really buy into their importance, then it will be tough to motivate yourself when you show up at the gym.
3. Find new ways to challenge yourself.
When you’re new to CrossFit, you learn a lot very quickly. It’s easy for challenges to present themselves. But as you learn and improve, the skills or movements that used to challenge you are no longer difficult. If you’re no longer feeling challenged, then you might find yourself stuck on a fitness plateau.
To get back to making gains, first you must recognize that you are stuck. Then, it’s up to you to find a new way to challenge yourself. Improve a skill, compete in an event, or set a new PR. If you have no idea where to begin, ask your coaches for some guidance.
