When you’re not able to make it into the gym for your regular workout, keep your momentum going by maintaining your habit from home.

Here are three tips on how to maintain your fitness habit from home:

1. Work out at the same time each day.

When you’re working out from home, create a daily routine where you work out at the same time each day. Rather than waiting until you feel like working out (which on some days might be never), treat your workout like an appointment and hold yourself accountable to that time slot. After a few days of working out at the same time, you’ll fall into a more familiar routine where you’ll be less likely to skip out on your daily workout.

2. Re-evaluate your fitness goals.

If you find yourself in a position where you’ll be working out from home for an extended period of time, then you might need to re-evaluate your fitness goals. For example, your previous goals might’ve been working toward a new back squat PR. But now you no longer have access to a squat rack and plates. Rather than giving up on your goals entirely, table the squat PR goal and come up with a new (perhaps temporary) goal. Do the best with the equipment you have available at the time and focus on what you’re able to work on (rather than what you’re not). By setting new fitness goals to work toward while at home, you’ll be more motivated and excited to keep up with your fitness habit.

3. Record your workouts.

No matter where you get your workout in, keeping a record of your workouts allows you to see how you’re progressing. It also helps keep your mind organized and focused on maintaining your workout schedule. By either continuing or starting to track your workouts, you’ll increase not only accountability but also the likelihood that you’ll sustain your fitness habit. And in the future, you’ll be able to look back and see what you’ve accomplished over time.
