As much as we miss the sound of barbells and having access to equipment, there are quite a few benefits of bodyweight-only workouts.
Here are six advantages of bodyweight workouts:
1. No equipment is necessary.
A bodyweight-only workout is the most straightforward workout you can plan for. Little to no equipment is needed. It’s nice to have access to some type of pullup bar, but it’s not necessary. All you have to do is throw your shoes on and get to work. And for a lot of bodyweight workouts, you may not even need your shoes.
2. You can work out anywhere.
One of the biggest advantages of bodyweight workouts is convenience. You can work out anywhere – your living room, garage, backyard, neighborhood park, etc.
3. Maintain and build lean body mass.
Even when you don’t have access to barbells, dumbbells, or kettlebells, you can still get an effective strength workout using just your bodyweight. Resistance is resistance, and the resistance you get from moving your body weight around is enough to maintain and even build lean body mass.
4. Improve aerobic and anaerobic fitness.
At the same time, bodyweight workouts are effective at improving your cardiovascular endurance. Many times, a workout will look easy on paper. But once you get into it, your heart rate will increase, leading to improvements in your cardiovascular health and fitness.
5. Option for plenty of variations.
At first, working with only your bodyweight may seem like a limitation. But, what you’ll find is that the variations in bodyweight workouts are endless.
6. Scale or modify as needed.
Just like a weighted movement, bodyweight movements have all the scaling and modifications you need. There are ways you can scale up or down to meet your fitness level.
