When was the last time you checked in on your progress toward your fitness goals? With it being about the halfway point of the year, now is a great time to do so.
As you check-in on your progress, you might find that your goals need some small modifications or possibly a complete overhaul. If you’re not where you had intended or feel like you’ve fallen behind in some way, don’t be discouraged. Keep in mind that checking-in on your goals is meant to motivate you to keep moving forward. Now is the time to adjust and make any necessary changes to your workout routine so that you get the results you’re looking for.
If you’re familiar with the SMART goal framework, you’ll recognize a few key elements to keep in mind as you check in on your fitness goals:
S. Specific
As you revisit the goals you had previously set, make sure that you’ve clearly defined what you’re working toward. If your goal is more vague, like “get fit,” it’s difficult to know when you’ve achieved it. In this case, define what “fit” means to you.
M. Measurable
Do you have a way to measure your progress toward your goal? If not, add some parameters around your goals so that you can gauge your progress.
A. Attainable
Your goals should be challenging but still realistic. If you’ve set a goal that seems to stretch your limits beyond what’s possible, then modify your goal so that it will push you but is still within reach.
R. Relevant
Check in to make sure that your goals are still relevant. Are you still excited about pursuing them? If not, now is a great time to set new goals for things that you’re motivated to work toward.
T. Time-Based
When will you achieve your goal? Set a deadline for accomplishing your goal. If you had set a deadline in the past that you weren’t able to meet, update your timeline to fit your current fitness level or status.
