Once you get to a place where you’re consistently working out, you may notice that your motivation level is anything but steady. Some days you’ll wake up excited to get to the gym! Other days? You won’t.
Why does this happen? It’s not because you’re doing something wrong. Everyone experiences something like this. So what can you do about it?
Here are a few tips on how to stay motivated to work out:
1. Keep your goals somewhere visible.
Goal-setting is a great way to stay motivated. Write down your goals, and then post them someplace where you won’t forget about them. If you keep your goals visible, like on the bathroom mirror or refrigerator, then you’ll get a motivating reminder of what you’re working toward.
2. Don’t keep your goals a secret.
You don’t have to share your goals with the whole world, but if you tell a family member or friend, then you’ll get some support and accountability. Chasing your goals independently is a noble objective, but having a few people in your corner to cheer you on will increase your chances of success. This cheering squad might also provide you with an extra nudge on the days when your motivation is beginning to drop.
3. Work out with a group.
When you work out on your own, some days it can be far too easy to talk yourself out of going to the gym, which is why it can help to surround yourself with a group of motivated people. Not only do you get a knowledgeable coach when you work out with a group, but you also get a great workout. Even on the days where you’re not really looking forward to working out, all you have to do is show up. No workout planning is required; just show up.
4. Make sure you have fun.
A workout should challenge you, but at the same time you should have fun with what you’re doing. We want you to work hard, and you’ll undoubtedly sweat and probably get sore sometimes. But there has to be some part of all that work that is still fun. The more you enjoy your workouts, the more likely you are to stay motivated to keep showing up at the gym to train.
